Promoting Health

We reach out to people from all walks of life, and through our projects, help them to improve their health and wellbeing.

Scotland faces some serious health issues - challenges such as rising levels of obesity, the misuse of drugs and alcohol and mental health and wellbeing are pressing problems.

As recently as 2004, life expectancy for women in Scotland was the lowest in the European Union and the second lowest for men.  In deprived areas, such as North Glasgow, mortality rates are 43% above the national average.

Isolation is also a problem in Scotland, especially for people with long-term health conditions, carers and older people. As the population continues to age, more and more people find themselves alone and cut off from the community - this has a knock-on effect on their health and wellbeing.

We use our projects to engage with people who are experiencing poor health and wellbeing, encouraging them to get outdoors on to the canal towpaths for fresh air and exercise.  The opportunity to meet new people, learn about their environment and gain new skills can create a new sense of belonging and purpose - leading to improved health and wellbeing.

We can't do it alone - help us to transform lives through the power of our canals.

The number of deaths from drug and alcohol related causes in deprived areas is over twice the national average
