Environment and Heritage
The canals are a vital part of our Scottish heritage - they
showcase an incredible feat of engineering, and include some of the
most beautiful scenery in the world.
Today, the canal network is vibrant and full of life, however
this is a huge transformation from the underused waterways in poor
repair in the 1960s - when they were used as dumping grounds, or
worse, filled in completely.
Scotland's four navigable canals are now recognised as Scheduled
Ancient Monuments, and we work hard with our partners to conserve
the astonishing heritage and environment of our unique canal
system.
We want to connect people with the heritage, wildlife and green,
open spaces of our canals.
With your help we can transform lives and
inspire communities across Scotland for generations to
come.

We're currently involved in a range of projects across the
Scottish Canals, from bringing a section of disused canal back to
life to using a Canal Reminiscence Kit to help groups learn about
the canals.
