Volunteer Mentor Role - canal college

"Mentoring is a learning relationship between two people. It requires a range of human qualities such as trust, commitment and emotional engagement. It also involves a range of skills including listening, challenging, and supporting."  (Mentoring researcher)

Purpose of role:

To create a positive relationship with young people on the canal college programme, and to act as a suitable role model. We ask that you advise, assist, support and motivate the young people to engage with planned activities to develop skills and appropriate attitudes, which will assist them in achieving and sustaining their personal goals.

A canal college mentor needs to be…

  • A listener
  • Understanding
  • Challenging
  • Sensitive
  • Sharing
  • A sounding board
  • Able to give honest, reliable and constructive feedback
  • Aware of boundaries
  • Committed to supporting a young person
  • Open to new experiences

You will be responsible for:

  • Providing guidance and support to the young people volunteering throughout their 14 week placement
  • Supporting volunteers to be actively involved in the volunteering activities and workshops provided
  • Supporting the Project Coordinator with ensuring the health & safety of the young people
  • Encouraging completion of the different awards offered throughout the programme
  • If appropriate advise the Project Coordinator of any issues arising to ensure that we can work together to support the group and individuals effectively

Time commitment required:

The canal college runs over two days a week for 14 weeks. We would require you to commit to a minimum of one day a week over a minimum of 14 weeks to ensure consistent support throughout each programme.

Skills needed:

No specific skills are required, but experience of working outdoors or with young people would be beneficial.

You will have life experience and sharing these with a volunteer can be invaluable. Your advice and support can help them recognise life choices, think about things differently and make difficult decisions. You can help them get on in life.
