Scottish Waterways Trust launches Green Action training programme to improve young people’s job prospects in Falkirk

Scottish Waterways Trust is now recruiting applicants for Green Action, a free youth employability programme based at The Falkirk Wheel.

Made possible with Young Start funding from the BIG Fund and Forestry Commission Scotland, the Green Action programme has been designed to help 16-25 year olds in the Falkirk area who have experienced setbacks in their education or work take steps towards employment.

Green Action, which begins on Thursday 24th September and will run every Thursday for 12 weeks, combines real work experience with the opportunity to gain valuable skills training and certificates.

Since it launched five years ago, 350 young people have taken part in Green Action and Scottish Waterways Trust’s other employability programme canal college® with 72% securing a job, place in training, education or a new volunteering role afterwards.

Learning and Certificates

The free course will give young volunteers the chance to carry out a range of practical outdoors activities including landscaping and gardening, forest tasks, conservation tasks, woodworking, planting bulbs and wildflowers and painting and maintenance.

Participants will also have the opportunity to achieve a number of CV boosting awards and certificates, including the Saltire and John Muir Awards. Interview skills, job searching, CV writing and tips on how to make a good impression and how to behave in the workplace will also be delivered by experienced, disclosed trainers.

Green Action Project Manager Alan Forrester explains:

“We are delighted to begin another 12-week Green Action employability programme in September. The young volunteers receive practical outdoors skills training at the unique setting of The Falkirk Wheel, beside The Forth and Clyde and Union Canals. Over the past five years we have seen young people gain confidence and improve their self-esteem whilst learning vital employability skills. Once again we aim to help volunteers take that first, vital step towards securing work placements, jobs and places on further education courses.”
