Scotland’s canals unlocked for Doors Open Days

We’ve had a busy month of fun activities for Doors Open Days, Scotland’s architecture festival, which gives free access to hundreds of buildings, walks & tours during September.

We started the month at Bona Lighthouse near Inverness, which we opened up to the public for the first time since its transformation by Scottish Canals from a derelict eyesore to stunning holiday cottages. Around 120 people joined us to explore the history of the building & enjoy stunning views of Loch Ness. We held walks in Inverness too – and what a day we had for it!

In Glasgow, we worked with Scottish Canals to give free water taxis along the Forth & Clyde canal, exploring the canals industrial past in north Glasgow. It’s a different pace of life on a canal boat & we could almost forget we were in the city.

Finally in Edinburgh last weekend, we led guided tours unlocking the history of the Union Canal and its impact on the places lining its banks. We went off the beaten track of the towpath to explore Fountainbridge & its past as a place of innovation, industry & change.

It’s all over for this year, but there’s always time to get out and explore a canal near you. What unexpected treasures might you find? If you’ve got a tale to tell or photo to share, connect with us on Facebook or Twitter.
